This break is unusual because there is no potable water between the Supai Tunnel and Phantom Ranch. That’s 12 miles with no water! You’ll have to get your water from Bright Angel Creek. Be sure to bring a way to purify the water. You don’t want to get sick down here.

The Devil Made Me Do It

This is a little more than half way up the Devil’s Corkscrew on the Bright Angel Trail. It’s probably the steepest and hottest part of the whole trail. Fortunately it’s not that long and just above is a cool oasis in the Tapeats formation along Garden Creek.

Close to Cottonwood

If you’re hiking north on the North Kaibab Trail you know you’re getting close to Cottonwood Campground at this point. It’s a little over a mile away and just around the bend from the small cliff in the middle of the picture. The Ribbon Falls trail is just down the hill from where this picture was taken. Be sure to take a little side trip to visit the falls. They are spectacular.

Down The River

This dory was in the IMAX film “Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk.” Riding in a dory down the Colorado is more exhilarating than riding in a raft. You’re riding higher and bouncing around a bit more. This is on my checklist of things I’ve got to do.

The Eye of the Needle

This is the part of the North Kaibab Trail where people with a fear of heights get itchy feet. You can see the trail at the bottom of the “eye” on the right. Look farther along the cliff in the distance and the trail continues. This is a spectacular section of the trail.

The view looking down when standing behind Ribbon Falls. A lot of people are nervous about climbing up here and they should be. It’s wet, slippery and a long way down. Be careful if you decide to climb up.

It’s not always (if fact never) easy to hike anywhere in the Grand Canyon. Even the Corridor Trails are pretty tough unless you hike regularly–like every week. Take a break every hour and put your feet up. They will thank you later.
